study : VSL did not lower TMAO levels

Small anecdotal study (19 healthy volunteers)
To see if VSL probiotic supplement would lower TMA-o levels after a high fat meal
TMAO levels rose in both groups (no VSL, with VSL)
Means in this study VSL had no effect on stopping TMAO levels rise after high fat meal

Title : Probiotic supplementation and trimethylamine-N-oxide production following a high-fat diet

My comment on study :
Quite a small study, but these types are useful in providing insight quickly. Such studies must be read with caution though. It will have been carried out due to the publicity about how TMA-oxide may be a cause of CVD and possible other disorders such as diabetes (relatively new hypothesis being debated). VSL is a well known popular probiotic brand.

"A high-fat diet increases plasma TMAO in healthy, normal-weight, young males. However, VSL#3 treatment does not appear to influence plasma TMAO concentrations following a high-fat diet."
Relevance to systemic body odor :
Since TMA in humans is turned into TMA-oxide by FMO3, it means the 'system' is now interested in TMA/TMAO metabolism in humans, and in FMO3. Before this 'TMAO bad for humans' hypothesis (in 2011), there was almost no interest in TMA/TMAO/FMO3. So it should lead to a lot of understanding about TMA/TMAO/FMO3.

Personally I believe most people with Systemic Body Odor have a 'FMO3 overload/deficiency' issue, leading to problems with FMO3 substrates that are smelly sulfides and amines. So research into FMO3 in particular is welcome for SBO patients.

Probiotics and SBO : I have suspected for a while there may be a contraindication with current probiotics and SBO, though not sure why. It's just a suspicion. In theory probiotics should help, but I feel too little is known about the gut flora at the moment and probiotics are at a very early stage of understanding and the current probiotics are pretty 'blunt'. It may be that different types of gut dysbiosis need different 'selective' probiotics.

Update Aug 17 :
Genos is back with it's EXOME test
link

Note :
Exome/Genome testing may be better option than single gene testing.

See this post : link

Note : Genos Exome Testing.

Exome testing is almost the same price now as single gene testing. Also Genos is consumer friendly, which standard DNA labs are not.

So the blog offer to test solely for FMO3 is almost obsolete, and so no longer offered.

Does Genos fully sequence FMO3 gene ?

At the moment it is not clear, but hoped this will become clear over the next few months

Note : possible 'wild west' way of testing FMO3
Use an ancestry dna site and rummage through the raw data
